UN Hiring in September 2026: What the Numbers Show
3,030 UN vacancies were posted in September 2026, 4% fewer than the month before. Here is what changed by grade, country and organisation — and what it means if you are applying.
UN organizations advertised 3,030 vacancies in September 2026 — 4% fewer than August 2026, when 3,147 were advertised. That is the pool you were competing in, and the best available picture of what the system was actually hiring for.
The figures are counted from the postings we track across 42 UN agencies, funds and programmes. Standing roster and talent-pool notices are excluded, because a notice that stays open for a year is not a vacancy. In short: posting volume fell, and the mix underneath it shifted.
September 2026 in Numbers
- Posted in September 2026: 3,030
- Posted in August 2026: 3,147
- Open right now: 1,464
- Closing within 7 days: 755
- Consultancies among the month’s postings: 870 (29%)
- Home-based or remote roles: 77
3,030 vacancy notices were published in September 2026 — 4% fewer than August 2026. Of those, 939 did not state a grade, which is itself worth knowing.
Which Grades Moved?
- Moved up: NO-C +78% (55 → 98), NPSA-4 +29% (14 → 18), NO-B +21% (72 → 87)
- Moved down: NPSA-8 -67% (33 → 11), NPSA-9 -54% (28 → 13), NO-A -45% (55 → 30)
Percentages appear only where both months had at least 10 postings at that grade, so a grade that went from 3 to 20 is not published as a 567% rise. A further 29 grades were too thin to compare at all and are left out rather than reported. Every figure above is a count of real postings, not an estimate.
The largest classified groups overall:
- CONSULT — 565 postings
- INTERN — 238 postings
- P-4 — 203 postings
- P-3 — 191 postings
- P-5 — 107 postings
One caveat that matters if you are reading this to plan an application: only 69% of this month’s postings stated a grade we could classify. The rest are consultancies, internships, UN Volunteer assignments and national posts that legitimately carry no P or G level — not missing data, but a different kind of contract.
Where the Jobs Were
Where the month’s vacancies were actually based. These are the countries with the most postings, not the most prestigious ones — duty station location drives both the competition you face and the post adjustment that lands on top of your salary.
- United States — 180 postings
- Switzerland — 144 postings
- DC — 125 postings
- Kenya — 100 postings
- Italy — 82 postings
77 of the month’s postings were fully home-based or remote. That category has grown every month we have been counting, and it is also the one with the least reliable grade information attached to it, so read the contract type before the title.
Who Was Hiring
The organizations with the most vacancies published. Counted by postings rather than by open roles, so an agency that advertises continuously does not dominate simply because its vacancies stay listed longer.
- UNICEF — 447 postings
- IOM — 406 postings
- WFP — 197 postings
- UNWOMEN — 136 postings
- WBG — 125 postings
A further 522 vacancies were posted under the UN Secretariat label. That is a catch-all covering many departments and duty stations rather than a single employer, so it is reported separately instead of being ranked against agencies.
What This Means If You Are Applying
- Move on the near deadlines. 755 vacancies close within a week of this snapshot. Applications that are nearly finished are the ones that get lost.
- Watch NO-C. It added the most postings of any grade this month (55 → 98), which usually means more than one agency is staffing up at that level at once.
- Decide how you feel about consultancy contracts. They were 29% of September 2026’s postings. They are faster to land and often better paid per day, but they carry none of the staff benefits.
- Filter by what you can actually control. Grade and duty station narrow a list faster than any keyword, and both are visible before you open a posting.
- Set an alert rather than checking. The agencies with the highest volume publish continuously, so the useful question is not what is open today but what appeared since you last looked.
Monthly totals move around, but the structure underneath them is stable: a small number of organizations do most of the hiring, consultancies and national posts are a growing share, and the roles with the least competition are the ones with the least glamorous duty stations. You can browse every open vacancy and filter by grade, agency or duty station to see how this month’s numbers map onto the roles on offer right now.
